Sitting there pitying yourself won’t change anything. In Hem’s case, he didn’t really even deserve a lifetime supply of cheese. Humans tend to think they’re superior because of how we can use our brains to do very complex things. Sometimes, the best solutions are simple, but not too simple or complicated.
But over time, he got so used to his luxurious life that he convinced himself he was entitled to all these things, like a spoiled brat. Hem chose to build these complex drilling machines to drill the walls for cheese rather than face his discomfort and go explore for new cheese.
The humans think they’re more sophisticated, but you’ll find out later that it backfires on them (as implied with the title). As he journeys to new areas of the maze, he pushes past his fears and learns many life lessons.
One day, all of them find a ton of cheese in one spot that looks like it’s enough to last them a lifetime. He writes a few lessons on the wall from time to time to encourage himself to move forward and for Hem if he ever decides to follow him.

Haw keeps exploring since these tiny bits aren’t enough to sustain him.They ran the organization to the ground because they kept to their old ways and didn’t improve their product with the times. Hem and Haw do what most humans do, which is slowly become entitled to things they shouldn’t be.He knew that he had to kept moving or he would be left behind.
