I think it's going to be like that now, too - I might start out listening to bands like Origin, but, given time, I'll start digging the less conventional bands, too :)EDIT: Wow, Vale of Pnath is amazing. This is a good album, maybe a little overrated - but the speed, especially the drums is impressive - and also probably the only thing about this album and Origin in general that stands them out from other average death metal bands. This is the lowest rating or most opposed point of view i have yet seen for this album. One of the big appeals of tech death is complex song structures, so bands usually strive for that.
What make In the May 2008 issue of Decibel, guitarist Paul Ryan admits that his playing is so full of sweep picking that someone needs to “get a dustpan.” But Ryan allows a certain amount of hookiness and melody to remain; on the best songs on – “The Aftermath,” “Wrath of Vishnu,” and “Finite” all come to mind – it almost sounds like Ryan and his band mates have taken standard death metal riffs and played them as shredtastic single notes instead of thick meaty power chords.
It’s the equivalent of sticking a playing card or baseball card in the spokes of your bicycle wheel rather than just letting it all blend together into one spinning metallic glean.
Even if your lead singer can make his voice sound like the most bowel-blasting bloody diarrhea ever, at the end of the day, the ability to play really complicated shit on your instrument really, really fast isn’t that impressive if what you just played made no impression on the listener.
In other words: just because you seem “tough” doesn’t necessarily make you any less ridiculous than Yngwie of De Ville or whatever other EVH wanna-be you’re so ready to ridicule.

Studio Tips: Make sure you have everything well practiced to a click before entering. That’s why Steve Smith, drummer of Journey (a rock band) is now one of the worlds premier jazz drummers. Don’t just practice death metal for death metals sake……. That’s fucking brutal And then there’s the nine minute-plus title track that closes out the album. It’s just relentless, a rabid dog that wants to tear your fucking jugular out.As you would expect from a epic of such size, the song is constantly shifting, evolving, and introducing new riffs – but each riff is somehow more memorable (and more pummeling) than the one that came just before it.They don't really sound like Origin, but Vale of Pnath's newest album follows a normal song structure for the most part.Archspire to a lesser degree (Remote Tumour Seeker, Calamus will Animate, Lucid Collective Somnambulation are songs like that), a few Job for a Cowboy songs (Misery Reformatory, maybe some stuff off Ruination)Overall there are going to be songs like that from most bands, just not all of them.Practice so you can endure 12 hrs of playing, so an 8 hr shift won’t kill you.Drummer Comments: I have recently started working on groove playing. Learning these grooves is more difficult than one may think.Spending two hours on a simple groove, focusing on feel, tempo, NOT hitting too hard………in doing this, I find my practice mentality is strengthened.
