Chicago Tribune First Amendment Essay

Berman will speak at a free educational seminar titled, “Our First Amendment Freedoms: Opportunities & Challenges in the Digital Age,” to be held Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at the Tribune Tower from pm to pm.

The seminar, sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in partnership with News in Education, will focus on how the application of the First Amendment impacts the lives of today’s young people. The goal of the program is “to increase students’ awareness about the First Amendment and the importance of knowing and exercising our rights protected by the Constitution,” and will include a panel discussion addressing issues such as freedom of the press, freedom of student expression, protections for bloggers, and challenges in creating school free expression policies. Berman, panelists will include: Tim Mc Nulty, Public Editor, and Randy Swikle, 1999 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund National Journalism Teacher of the Year. Berman recently served as a judge in the “First Amendment Essay Contest” in Chicago, a related ADL and News in Education sponsored event.
