Each of these essays help students develop their skills in writing about literature. The most important aspect of the log, however, is that it engages the student in the process of thinking about writing. The remainder are AP-like prompts that connect to the literature we read. To help students improve consistently in their writing over the year, each student will keep a writing log in a binder that will show progress and areas needing improvement.
For the log, get a binder (1" is preferred, not larger) and begin collecting the documents for each of the 10 "regular" essays (you do not need to put your critical essay responses in this log. Your analysis also needs its own title (not a label like Critical Analysis of John Smith's essay on Catcher in the Rye). However, it might not be immediately apparent that the phrase being referenced is figurative, so you may need to go back and look at it in the passage to be sure of what kind of question you are facing.Example: Still other questions will ask you to identify what purpose a particular part of the text serves in the author’s larger argument.Which interpretation offered in the answers does the passage most support? You can identify questions like these from words like “best supported,” ‘“implies,” “suggests,” “inferred,” and so on.My course may look very different from that of another teacher, but we should both be delivering the same content and building the same skills. The new guidance from College Board may just make that possible. You may also see words or phrases like “serves to” or “function.” Example: These questions will ask you to identify a rhetorical strategy used by the author. They will often specifically use the phrase “rhetorical strategy,” although sometimes you will be able to identify them instead through the answer choices, which offer different rhetorical strategies as possibilities.Keep all essays in chronological order (first to last), separated by a sheet of colored paper or a tab divider for each essay. Develop each paragraph fully according to directions. Also, be sure that you understand what you've written. After the title, include the bibliographic information for your essay. The divider page should be labeled with the name of the essay (or main topic/novel). (So if the writing prompt was given on a small piece of paper, tape it or staple it to a full sheet). And, ask yourself if someone else will understand what you've written.
